UCLA training camp: Saturday’s practice at a glance
A brief look at UCLA’s training camp practice at Spaulding Field
Cornerback Nate Meadors picked off quarterback Josh Rosen twice Saturday, both times on tipped passes. The first came off a high throw that grazed wide receiver Darren Andrews’ fingertips. Meadors, who rolls his white No. 22 jersey up to his chest during practice, outdueled wide receiver Alex Van Dyke on a 40-yard pass in the end zone for his second pick. The 5-foot-11 Meadors leaped to tip the pass away from the 6-3 Van Dyke, and the cornerback held on to the ball while the pair tumbled to the turf.
Coming to the tail end of a long training camp, emotions are starting to rise to the surface. Offensive and defensive players exchanged heated words several times in practice, including Andrews and linebacker Breland Brandt, running back Jalen Starks and linebacker Mique Juarez, and defensive lineman Martin Andrus and offensive lineman Zach Sweeney.
Play of the day
Ainuu Taua didn’t get to score any touchdowns during his brief stint with the offense last year as a fullback, but the defensive tackle found his way into the end zone Saturday. He picked off quarterback Matt Lynch and ran back a 20-yard pick-six. Linebacker Brandon Burton pressured the quarterback and forced a bad throw.
