Knocked down candle determined as cause of Santa Ana church fire
SANTA ANA – Investigators are calling a quickly extinguished fire at Saint Anne Catholic Church on Sunday morning, Aug. 20, a reckless act.
“It sounds like someone knocked over a candle and set the stage on fire,” said Orange County Fire Authority spokesman Tony Bommarito, adding that investigators listed damage at $70,000.
Firefighters were dispatched to the church at 1415 S. Sycamore St. at 7:47 a.m. and knocked down the blaze within 10 minutes, he said.
“It sounded like it was someone that may have entered illegally,” Bommarito said. It’s unlikely anyone will be charged since investigators did not determine the incident was arson.
