Four Irvine high school football teams gearing up for openers next week

Irvine high school football squads are gearing up for the start of the 2017 football season.

All the teams were practicing this week and Woodbridge was holding a scrimmage against Dana Hills on Friday, Aug. 18, at University.

Woodbridge opens the season on Thursday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. against Cypress at Western High.

Northwood, Irvine and Crean Lutheran also open up next week.

Irvine, under Coach Erik Terry, opens against Rancho Buena Vista on Friday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m. on the road.

Coach Matt Bowman’s Crean Lutheran squad meets Calvary Chapel of Santa Ana on Saturday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m. at Orange Coast College.

Northwood, under first-year coach Pete Mitchell, has its opener on Saturday, Aug. 26, against Saddleback Valley Christian at Portola High at 7 p.m.

Two other Irvine teams open the season the following week.

University plays at Laguna Hills on Friday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. Beckman hosts Santa Ana Valley on Friday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. at Tustin High.
