Dodgers acquire veteran outfielder Curtis Granderson from Mets
The Dodgers weren’t done when they acquired Yu Darvish and relievers Tony Watson and Tony Cingrani in the final hour before the non-waiver trade deadline.
They acquired veteran outfielder Curtis Granderson from the New York Mets in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations Friday. The Dodgers also received cash considerations to offset the approximately $3.8 million Granderson is owed in the final year of a four-year, $60 million contract he signed with the Mets.
“A little bittersweet to do that,” Granderson said in a post-game TV interview Friday night, asked about leaving the Mets. “But an opportunity to be able to go play in the postseason is exciting.”
This is the third consecutive year the Dodgers have added a veteran to their mix in August, beating the deadline for postseason eligibility. Two years ago, they added second baseman Chase Utley. Last year, it was catcher Carlos Ruiz.
A three-time All-Star with the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees, the 36-year-old Granderson was batting .228 with 19 home runs and an .815 OPS in 111 games for the Mets. But in 71 games since May 21, Granderson has hit .276 with a .300 on-base percentage and .603 slugging percentage thanks to 31 extra-base hits (13 doubles, two triples, 16 home runs).
Granderson has played all three outfield positions this season and adds another option to a growing group of left-handed hitting outfielders that already includes Joc Pederson (just two for his past 41) and Cody Bellinger (likely to play more in the outfield with the return of first baseman Adrian Gonzalez). Andre Ethier is expected back in September. And the Dodgers’ top position prospect, Alex Verdugo, is also a left-handed hitting outfielder and likely to get a September call-up.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers designated right-hander Dylan Floro for assignment. Floro was claimed on waivers from the Chicago Cubs earlier this month and appeared in three games with Triple-A Oklahoma City. Another move will be needed before Granderson can be added to the 25-man roster.
